Scientists Should Learn From Contact Experiencers

Introduction
As the Peruvian
representative for the International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research
(ICER)[1]
I affirm that the UFO (or UAP) Phenomenon includes an
extraterrestrial/non-human intelligent presence contacting and interacting with
humans on a global scale. If this assertion represents a fact (as always
increasing evidence gathered for over 75 years indicates), humanity needs to
know who we are dealing with. ICER is also interested in contributing to raising
the general level of education and conversation about this subject and its
implications in order to assist humanity to adapt to the growing acknowledgment
of this situation. For this reason, we cannot ignore those thousands (or
perhaps millions) of individuals worldwide that suspect, know, or claim to have
interacted with UFO-related, ET/non-human intelligent entities. And it is time
for the academic community, in general, to see what is taking place and to rise
up to meet the challenge.
According to
military and civilian witnesses and observed behavior and assessments, it seems
fairly safe to say that the UFO (or UAP) phenomenon not only is physically real[2]
but that it also transcends or manipulates “reality” as we know it. Any
physicalist interpretation remains wanting but this is no reason to ignore the
subject. The Phenomenon not only overcomes gravity and inertia, and appears to
materialize-dematerialize operating quite elusively but also (according to
close encounter experiencers or witnesses) seems to meaningfully and
provocatively interface with the human mind and awareness.
The contact
experience related to the UFO phenomenon is also culturally important because
it recurs and challenges our sense of reality since according to testimonies it
cancels our subjectively perceived experience of a continuous or stable
objective reality, not in the dream state but while consciously aware in the
‘real’ physical world (whose temporal and spatial parameters, besides other
parameters like solidity and inertia) are altered, almost as partially acquiring the characteristics of an
imaginary world. Moreover, the phenomenon seems to behave partly elusively but also
provocatively and interactively, much as Dr. Jacques Vallee contended with his
“Control Hypothesis.”[3] It
clearly violates or transcends the stability needed for a classical sense of reality
and seems to obey a different kind of logic which, in my view, originates in a
trans-ontological phenomenon.[4]
Just by
observing changes in acceleration (the third derivative after position) in the
objects associated to “The Phenomenon” we can deduce that it demonstrates
a measure of indeterminacy via intelligent control. If so, the multitude and
variety of contact experiencer accounts related to “UFO intelligences” and UFOs
cannot – in good faith - be simply dismissed as all related to the imagination,
lies, misperceptions or natural phenomena. Besides, it would be scientifically
unsound to reject the sheer number of reports and recurring sui generis
characteristics all over the world, and the fact that such events have been
experienced since before the 1940s often involving credible civilian and
military witnesses who occasionally take pictures, record videos and sometimes provide
other forms of physical evidence.
Besides UFOs
being detected with extraordinary transmedium capacities by radar arrays,
satellites, FLIR cameras and other energy signature detection devices as
recognized by the U.S. congressmen that recently ordered a UFO-UAP research in
the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act[5],
other even more unique, non-classical patterns can also be discerned from the
extensive human testimony available in UFO literature. And these patterns
relate to telepathy, presentiment, psychokinesis, temporal anomalies, apparitions,
and other “fringe” events that seem geared to “re-enchant” the world far beyond
any classical materialist physics. This ever-present distinctiveness connected
to UFO phenomena should serve as a basis to seriously study and catalogue cases
and to generate new suitable hypotheses that we may eventually find ways of
testing. All we need to do is to creatively organize ourselves around the data
and where it may lead us, consciously striving to overcome our closed-minded
biases and social taboos.
Studying Close
Encounter Reports
Between 2013 and
2018, a group of scientists, academicians, and lay researchers from the Edgard
Mitchell Foundation for Research into Extraterrestrial Encounters (FREE)
conducted a large scale, scientific, anonymous, international survey of
individuals that claimed to have experienced non-ordinary contact modalities with
non-human, intelligent beings after witnessing a UAP.[6]
Hundreds of questions were posed using quantitative and qualitative
questionnaires and (after tabulating the responses of more than 4000
individuals from several countries) there were unique findings. For instance,
against popular expectations, overall, 84% of individuals did not want their
contact experiences with non-human intelligent beings to end. The number of
these entities stubbornly considered “negative” was less than 10%. 66% of respondents considered their
experiences “positive” and 29% “negative”. 80% of contact experiencers also
reported having had an Out-of-Body Experience. 37% reported having had a
Near-Death-Experience. 50% reported healings from physical ailments and more
than 70% became more altruistic, caring, ethical, ecologically concerned, and
less avaricious and selfish. Some of these findings basically coincided with
those from another important survey conducted (with a smaller population) by
The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).[7]
For most
encounter cases, the complexity of the findings does not suggest either all-out
malevolence or complete airy-fairy, benevolence. They suggest forms of
encounters more associated with serious scientific procedures, but also with social
conditioning, teachings, or training, besides the sharing of information that
can sometimes be more specific and include different degrees of culturally and
scientifically meaningful details. It is important to recognize that during the
period in which the FREE Experiencer Survey took place, so many individuals
were motivated enough to respond to hundreds of questions anonymously. The book Beyond
UFOs details some of what they experienced and what was transmitted to them
during their close encounters.[8]
Scientists must
first come to terms with the non-classical uniqueness of the UAP and contact
experiencer phenomenon. Observations and reports include all sorts of physical
effects but also consciousness-based experiences. These effects consistently
experienced by millions of citizens worldwide require a unique theoretical
response. In order not to miss the qualitative connection with the UAP
phenomenon, I think that we vitally need to listen to what experiencers can
tell us and not just limit our focus on what can be measured and detected in,
for example, in terms of energy signatures. This uniqueness requires an
integral or integrative approach across categorical boundaries.
As Dr. June O.
Parnell and Dr. R. Leo Sprinkle showed in their 1990 paper “Personality
Characteristics of Persons Who Claim UFO Experiences,”[9]
the overall mental health of contact experiencers doesn’t show overt
psychopathologies. Dr. John Mack,[10]
and Dr. Leo R. Sprinkle[11]
also found this to be the case. Dr. Kenneth Ring[12]
in particular not only wrote about the basic psychological normalcy of contact
experiencers but also quite extensively about the mind-expanding,
transformational effects of contact experiences while the latter pioneer also
considered that they mainly represented an educational program: “A gradual, but
persistent, conditioning of human awareness for a new age of science and
spirituality (advanced technology and advanced morality).”
But, can we
apply a scientific procedure to try to determine if a contact case is genuine?
In Brazil, the Latin American Academy of Scientific Ufology (led by Dr. Julio
Acosta-Navarro, PhD., a university Professor from the School of medicine at San
Paolo University) has studied multiple alleged contact cases and developed an
initial method to try to scientifically ascertain if they are genuine. The
“Epimetheus Project”[13]
is based on twelve qualitative and quantitative criteria applied to each alleged
contact case in order to assign high or low probabilities of being authentic.
But the
complexity and number of contact cases available to study is astounding. Thus
far, I’ve just touched on a small number of reported studies. But I would also like
to recommend the pioneering research work by Lt. Col. Wendelle C. Stevens immortalized
in his books about the Eduard “Billy” Meier case[14]
but also via his “UFO Contact From” book series.[15] And, of course, there are so many other contactee
books referring to cases of friendly, physically conversant (often human-looking
aliens), such as the Daniel Fry and Paul Villa cases in the U.S. in 1950s and
similar cases (for instance, from the 1950s to the 1970s) in Mexico with the
Enrique Mercado Orue[16]
case and the Enrique Castillo-Rincon[17]
and Sixto Paz Wells[18]
cases from Central and South America.
Interestingly, the
mentally-expansive, transformative nature of these encounters is similar to the
also mentally expansive and transformative nature of Near-Death Experiences and
Out-of-Body Experiences as studied by Dr. Kenneth Ring[19]
and is still now being studied by members of the Consciousness and Contact
Research Institute[20],
“an academic research institute committed to an integrative approach to the entire
spectrum of psychophysical anomalies. Members include professionals in the
fields of Astrophysics, Theoretical Physics, Philosophy, Psychiatry,
Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology, Quantum Biology, Information Sciences,
Parapsychology and Medical Doctors.”
Also, a vast
compilation of more than 17,000 cases involving “humanoid encounters” since the
beginning of the XX Century is available online in a series of books by Albert
S. Rosales.[21]
Moreover, contact experiencer interviews like those of my friend Mr. Grey[22]
and the research by Preston Dennett[23]
and Miguel Mendonca[24]
provide in-depth information on specific cases under different circumstances. From
these cases, we can also try to ascertain the motivations and types of daily
realities of the UFO-related non-human intelligent beings that also seem to
establish in-depth communication and interest with humans. Finally, the
complexity of cases described by serious, dedicated researchers like Kathleen
Marden[25],
Barbara Lamb[26],
and Mary Rodwell[27]
(for instance, describing educational programs led by non-human entities but enjoyed
by some children) are all excellent sources adding to a vast corpus useful to
start some serious comparative analysis.
This enormous
amount of contact literature shows that the UFO Phenomenon can be very
interpersonal. However, we must never forget that contact experiencers can also
provide physical evidence. For example, contact experiencers have sometimes
reported anomalous objects located in their bodies after a UFO sighting or after
a period of missing time which they cannot account for or what seems to them as
a vivid dream with an alien. In this respect, podiatric surgeon Dr. Roger K.
Leir[28]
had several of these unique objects surgically extracted and analyzed in
reputable labs. Sometimes unusual isotopic ratios not naturally occurring on
Earth and other anomalies were found. This work is scientifically crucial and
should continue!
“The alleged
implants removed from the first set of surgeries were studied by two different
pathologists, and then sent to various independent laboratories for extensive
scientific analysis. The tests performed on these alleged alien implants were:
a pathology/tissue evaluation, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS),
extensive metallurgical testing involving a density immersion test, X-ray
energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction
pattern analysis and electron/magnetic and fluorescence property analysis.
Isotopic range tests are also in progress. Tests were conducted by the National
Institute of Discovery of Science (NIDS), New Mexico Tech, and other
independent sources.”
“The findings of
these implant surgeries are highly unusual,” reported Dr. Leir. “In all these
cases, there was virtually no inflammatory response.” This is not the usual
finding in foreign tissue reactions. Normally, foreign bodies embedded in
tissues result in some type of acute or chronic inflammatory response and may
include fibrosis and cyst formation. Such was not the case here. The pathology
reports of the first two surgeries revealed that the metallic objects were
encased in a very dense, tough, grey membrane consisting of proteinaceous
coagulum, hemoseridin, and pure keratin. More simply, blood protein and skin cells
that are usually found in the superficial layer of the skin. The tough,
biological “cocoons” encasing the implants were also found to contain nerve
proprioceptors – nerve and pressure cells of the wrong tissue type for that
part of the body. These implant cocoons also fluoresced a bright green color in
the presence of an ultraviolet light source.”
“The implants
from the two women from the second set of surgeries did not exhibit metallic
properties like the implants from the first set of surgeries. In fact, the
spheroid, whitish objects did not contain the tough, biological outer jackets,
or fluoresce from a UV light source. These types of implants (possibly
biological) also lacked the expected inflammatory response, according to the
pathology reports. The crystalline-like object excised from the foot in the
most recent surgery also lacked the tough, grey, outer membrane and had
virtually no inflammatory response, as in the other implant surgeries. Test
results from the first set of implants revealed that the lamellar, needle-shaped metallic objects in question are basically meteoric in origin,
containing at least eleven different elements.”[29]
Towards Improved
Theories and Methodologies
A halfway
approach between the hard sciences and the idea that the cosmos derives at its
core from meaning and relationships that can be experienced by self-aware
beings could be Jimmy Blanchette’s radio communication experiments which,
apparently, include successful and verifiable interactive relationship with a
variety of UAP intelligences using specific radio frequencies through which more
numerical clues and ratios related to the physical constants are being received
both visually and by means of sounds.[30] Serious scientists like Bob McGwire[31]
(an expert in radio frequency communication and digital signals processing,
former CIA scientist, founder of Sky 360, and a member of the Scientific
Coalition for UAP Studies), are becoming interested in this work.
These
mathematical values and their ratios could represent some of the fundamental
principles of the intelligent mathematical design that extends in a fractal
manner throughout the – experience-facilitating universe. I suspect that they
could also relate to why the nondimensional number 137 (or its reciprocal
1/137) has the value it does while seemingly all the other atomic constants
have to adapt to it (as per what Jose Alvarez Lopez, Ph.D. found)[32].
I think that we
soon need to overcome a Ufology divided into researchers and enthusiasts that
excessively include or exclude contacts with UFO intelligences. Even former
“nuts & bolts” organizations like MUFON are now including more abduction
and contact experiences.
Attorney Manuel
Lamiroy, creator of the Exopaedia and Exopolitics South Africa, based upon a
long-term accumulation of experiencer testimonies and multiple sources, surmises
about 120 extraterrestrial different “races” or civilizations operating on Earth
and/or interacting with humans in different degrees.[33]
Their exophenotypology would also be quite varied.[34]
All of this
leads us to ask ourselves how are we going to learn to relate politically in a
constructive manner with a varied, intelligent, non-human presence related to
UFOs. And this takes me to briefly mention the emerging field of Exopolitics
defined as “…an interdisciplinary scientific field, with its roots in the
political sciences, that focuses on research, education and public policy with
regard to the actors, institutions and processes, associated with
extraterrestrial life, as well as the wide range of implications this entails
through public advocacy and newly emerging paradigms.”[35]
However, in
terms of extending the foundations of the natural sciences to better explain
contact experiences, we need new theoretical and methodological approaches that
fit the data rather than trying to fit the data into accepted theories. One of
the most interesting recent attempts to explore this need is the book Beyond
UFOs: The Science of Consciousness & Contact with Non-Human Intelligence[36]
published by the Consciousness and Contact Research Institute (CCRI). In it,
multiple authors (mostly PhDs) explore the premise that consciousness is a
fundamental feature of reality. Keeping a foothold on physics they also strive
to understand how consciousness may act as a common factor among different
“contact modalities” and the manipulation of spacetime itself.
Moreover, the emerging
metadisciplinary academic field of “Exo Studies” recognizes the ontological
reality of physical and non-physical (subtle, imaginal) intelligent entities
associated with the UFO phenomenon should be mentioned and praised as threading
together a necessarily comprehensive variety of ontologies and methodologies suitable
to the complex experiential and objective data of the phenomenon. According to Sean Esbjorn-Hargens, PhD[37].
“Exo Studies is the metadisciplinary study of all anomalous phenomena that lie
outside our current models of explanation and views of reality. The existence
of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) (also known as unidentified aerial
phenomena [UAPs]) and their extraterrestrial (ET) or extradimensional (ED)
occupants is arguably one of, if not the most, heavily researched and well
documented of all anomalous phenomena.”
We would also
need new methodologies that deliver objective verification but include possible
interactions with UAP intelligences. In this respect, I always think about the
possibility of using personal relationships developed by certain contact
experiencers with non-human entities that may sometimes allow them to provide
objective evidence. Such evidence has, for instance, been provided by some contact
experiencers like Ricardo Gonzalez[38]
as witnessed by myself, Paola Harris[39][40]
and Rob Freeman (who was also able to record it)[41].
Thus, I
recommend scientists be willing to change their minds. To befriend the
qualitative, subjective, interpersonal that probably holds unrecognized keys to
understand “The Phenomenon”, to explore more interactive methods with “The
Phenomenon.” The roots of classic materialism are being underpinned even by
some of the most prominent physicists (for instance by questioning whether
spacetime is as fundamental as entanglement).[42]
So, what are we to make of this?[43] Shouldn’t we give more credence to the relational
approach of contact experiencers as a way to complement and supplement what a
purely objective approach to “The Phenomenon” cannot achieve?
Conclusion
As an ICER
member, I consider that there are plenty of good reasons to take the issue of
human contact experiences much more seriously into the academic and political
arena. The Phenomenon is meaningfully experienced and itself comes across as intelligently
controlled. This non-orthodox information beckons us to open up to radically new
scientific vistas and begin international exopolitical and cultural conversations
in earnest. As mentioned, more comprehensive theoretical frameworks and more
flexible and creative research methods are required and being created.
As suggested, in
order to begin understanding who the intelligences behind the UFO (UAP)
phenomenon are, it would befit scientists to listen to experiencers, acquire
data by working with them, and even attempt to interact with “The Phenomenon” as
“participants observers” even as they remain capable of conducting objective
research using scientific instruments. Scientists remain crucial players to
help ordinary citizens assimilate the revelation of a much vaster reality.
